White Coat Hypertension in elderly with Isolated Systolic Hypertension From the population-based 11-country International Database on Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring in Relation to Cardiovascular Outcomes database (IDACO), Franklin and co-workers studied the prognosis of white coat hypertension in subjects with isolated systolic blood pressures (ISH). Subjects with untreated ISH and white coat hypertension (WCH) had a similar low risk for cardiovascular events as normotensive untreated individuals. Subjects with antihypertensive treatment and an ambulatory blood pressure normalized to normotension had a higher risk for cardiovascular events than untreated normotensives. This was not unexpected. However, subjects with WCH and treated to normotension had a similar higher risk for cardiovascular events as those with sustained hypertension treated to normotension.
